TASTE OF BRITAIN-3「英国チーズ６種 テイスティング」

2025年春。桜も満開の4月6日、日曜日。久々の、英国を味わう「テイスト・オブ・ブリテン」です。日本のお店では入手困難な英国チーズ6種のテイスティングイベントを行いました。当初予定のピクニック形式での開催は天候不安定により断念。井の頭公園文化交流広場でのピクニックからエイトリアム教室での「屋内」ピクニックと相成ったのでした。

６種のチーズに加え、イギリス家庭の冷蔵庫には常備されている BRANSTON PICKLES（ブランストンピクルス）を添えたアソートセットを￥1,000で販売しました。天気が良ければお花見を兼ね、POTLUCK（ポットラック＝持ち寄り）のピクニックスタイルでテイスティングを行うことを想定していたので、生徒さん達手作りのケーキやビスケット、チーズに合うパンやワインがテーブル狭しと集まりました。クイズでチーズ雑学に触れながらの屋内ピクニック。イベントが終わりに近づいた頃には空に晴れ間が！

ANSWERS & SOME ‘CHEESY’ FACTS
1. (B) Cheddar is the most popular cheese not only in the UK, but in the world. Originally from Cheddar Gorge in southwest England.
2. (A) Cheshire cheese has been made in the UK from before the Romans arrived more than 2000 years ago.
3. (A) Stilton comes in blue and lesser-known white cheese, which is milder, semi-soft cheese.
4. (B) Pear, the rind is soaked in Perry, an alcoholic drink made from pears.
5. (A) Wensleydale was made in Yorkshire by the French monks in the 14th century.
6. (B) Ash gives a unique flavour and helps to protect the cheese.
7. (B) Over 700. The British Cheese Board Dairy UK states that “there are over 700 named British cheeses produced in the UK”.
8. (B) Blue Monday. Alex James who plays bass in Blur is also cheesemaker. He created Blue Monday cheese and named it after his favourite New Order song.

That’s cheesy. イギリス人がよく使う表現で、テイスト、スタイルが無い。安っぽい。風変りでおかしい、などと言った意味で使われることが多いが、日本語では言い換えるのが難しい単語の一つだそう。 イギリス英語には居心地の悪さ、気分の悪さを表す英語表現がとても多いのだとか。

BLUE MONDAY
チーズクイズにも登場したが、90年代のブリットポップ人気をOASISと二分したバンド、BLUR。ベーシストのアレックスジェイムズは2000年代に入りオックスフォードシャーの土地を購入してチーズ作りを始めた。その代表作がBLUE MONDAYという名のブルーチーズである。その名はアレックスが大好きなバンド、80年代に活躍したNEW ORDER最大の12インチシングルヒット曲に由来する。NEW ORDERの前身であったJOY DIVISIONのヴォーカリスト、イアンカーティスの自殺を知った月曜のことを歌った名曲をブルーチーズに名づけるとは！ これはもう口にしないわけにはいかない。イギリスのスーパーマーケット、Sainsbury’sで購入できる。
